Reasons why you’re not making it past the interviewing stage

It is a hard pill to swallow when you don’t hear back from recruiters.

Here are 5 reasons why you may be losing out…

1. Your CV is not up to par.
Your CV is what gets you through to the first stage of the process, it is the first stage! Spend time going through every detail to make sure it is accurate. Spelling and grammar are a HUGE reason why recruiters will overlook you. More than half of hiring managers will dismiss CV’s with spelling mistakes on.

Your CV layout is also important; the use of imagery and coloured text does not promote a professional attitude so make sure you just stick to the facts – generally about how amazing your skills and experience are for the position

2. The job is no longer available.
For reasons unknown to you, the job may have become unavailable. It could simple be because the job has been filled. More often than not, Hiring Managers will have already had someone in mind. The extra interviews will usually be to fill a quota or other targets. It could also be that the company has had to put the position on hold due to any number of issues.

Unfortunately, companies tend not to bother communicating this to potential candidates so make sure you keep in touch with the recruiter for updates regarding your application

3. The interview didn’t go well.
Going back over your interview, objectively, can be quite difficult. However, it can be a good tool to help you decide whether it went well or not. Were you prepared enough? Did you do plenty of company research? Preparation is everything for an interview and if you haven’t prepared, the interviewer is going to notice! If you think a quick scan on the internet is going to get you through, think again

4. You just weren’t qualified.
Sometimes, you just aren’t as qualified or experienced as some of the other applicants. That isn’t to say that you couldn’t do the job; there was just someone, they thought, had the potential to do it better.  Another reason you might not have had the right qualifications, even though you read the job description carefully before applying, is that the recruiter had other qualifications in mind that you were unaware of.

5. Your end of interview questions just didn’t cut it.
Did you ask any questions in your interview and if you did, where they quality questions?
We all know that we should ask a question at the end of an interview but let’s make sure it is a quality one! A quality questions shows that you are serious about the position.

Job hunting is hard so don’t be disheartened by one or two failed interviews. Unfortunately, a lot of the recruitment process is uncontrollable so make sure you take charge of the parts that you can control!  If you’re looking for a new IT Project role, visit our vacancies page here.
