Are you sure you’re hiring the right candidate?

| Client Blog |

It can be a gruelling process trying to find the right candidate. Trawling through hundreds of CV’s, whittling down the shortlist, choosing which candidates are worth interviewing and so on.

So, how do you know if you’re hiring the right person and are you doing everything you can to ensure that person will be a long-term hire? Below, we have come up with a few ways that can help this process.

 1. Culture fit is IMPORTANT

Establishing your company culture can be simple but making sure that all the people you hire fit with your culture can sometimes prove difficult. Of course, you want the best of both worlds, skilled, experienced talent that also fits in with how your business operates.

Unfortunately, this can’t always be the case and now days, culture fit seems to be outranking skills and experience. A happy employee equals long-term employment.

2. More than a face-to-face

Sometimes it’s a good idea to do more than just a face-to-face interview. While it is an important part of the process, there are plenty of people out there that are just good at being interviewed. They know how to present themselves and how to tell you what you want to hear.

The best way to find out more about the true capabilities of a candidate is to introduce some other means of analysis. Try a short skills test or a quick personality quiz.

3. Listen to the questions they ask you

All candidates know that they should ask questions during an interview – that’s just good practice. As an interviewer, you should pay attention to the kind of questions they ask. How relevant to the position are they? Are they in-depth questions about your business and reflect enthusiasm for the role?

The conversation should flow, and the quality of their questions should prompt you to ask the candidate other relevant questions not just about the job role but about them as person.

4. Let them spend time with your team

If there are several candidates that you believe would perform well in the role, the best way to determine who would be the ultimate fit would be to let them spend time with your team.

Not only does it allow you to observe how they react to other members of your team, it gives their potential managers a chance to provide feedback on how they think the candidate would fit in with the company culture.

 5. Trust your instincts

Whether we like it or not, we always have a gut feeling when we first meet people. This is true during interviews as well.

While we would like to say that we are impartial when it comes to choosing the most qualified candidate, you’ll always lean more towards the one you believe will be the best fit. Trust your instincts!
